Mindful Parenting Workshop
Jun 19 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

A workshop on meditation, tools, and resources to cultivate a mindful parenting practice.

Shannon Salentine is a parent, leadership coach, and global program director. Over the last five years Shannon and her husband have been cultivating a spiritual practice for their family that is aligned with their values, the developmental stages of their children, and what feels right. In this effort, Shannon’s family discovered a community of parents dedicated to practicing mindfulness. Through this community and her own self-immersion, Shannon developed a strong appreciation for the tools mindfulness offers parents and a practice that serves her daily.

Join Shannon as she shares how meditation and various mindfulness resources have helped her as a parent. During the workshop we’ll talk (and practice) mediation and discuss the integration of mindfulness into family life. You’ll come away from this workshop with examples of mindfulness tools and some practice in using them!

*We are located in the Woodcroft neighborhood in Durham in the same location as the club house and community pool*

Nurture Your Passion: Beginning Photography
Jun 26 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
This is the first workshop in our new workshop series we call “Nurture Your Passion”. This series is designed for teens and adults to explore hobbies they are passionate about. Rediscovering our passions (or discovering new ones) can bring some simplicity back into our lives. This can lead to new freedom in our day-to-day routines.
I am Heather Craig at Sourwood Photography in Chapel Hill, and I’d love to help you learn the basics of photography. A class like mine can really start you off in photography with a lot less frustration and trial and error, and shorten your learning curve.
You’ll learn how ISO, aperture and shutter speed work together for a good exposure, what depth of field is, some great composition tips and more in this 2-hour beginners class.
This class is for ages 14+. Students should have a DSLR they can put in ‘Manual’ mode, and come to class with their camera, a charged battery, SD card and something to take notes with. Students should also know how to change their ISO, shutter speeds and aperture values so they can practice what they’ve learned during the breaks (every camera is a little bit different, so this is worth looking up before getting to class).

Nurture your Passion: Musical Performance w/ Rissi Palmer
Jul 12 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

DESCRIPTION

2 Hour Workshop includes:
• short performance from Rissi
• Q&A
• one on one work sessions in a classroom setting (at least 8 minutes of one on one)
• tackling trouble spots vocally
• connection to a song emotionally
• stage presence and microphone technique
• song critique (for songwriting)
Having studied voice for 18 years under industry veterans Louis Valenzi (Broadway and television actor) and Robin Brown (accomplished vocalist, vocal coach to Destiny’s Child, Solange, Usher, etc.), Rissi Palmer has partnered what she has learned from her esteemed instructors and her years of touring and recording to create a voice curriculum for students who are interested in performing as well as singing. She is passionate about helping her students find and develop their own unique sound by tailoring her lessons to the student’s age and experience level. In addition to using traditional vocal warm ups, exercises, and breathing techniques in her curriculum, students are encouraged to choose the music they are interested in. While she doesn’t believe in traditional voice lessons for any child under the age of 13, Ms. Palmer believes that it’s never to early for a student to develop ear training and learn to sing tunefully.
Since writing her first song at 6 and receiving her first publishing deal at the age of 19, Rissi has taken her years of songwriting in Nashville and New York City and created a curriculum for students who are interested in lyric and music composition. She is passionate about helping her students find and develop their own unique voice and style by teaching the differences and similarities of various genres (i.e. Country, R&B, Pop, Rock, Indie, etc), encouraging students keep a journal, and using various exercises to dissect and learn the techniques of great songwriters of yesterday and today.
*This workshop is designed for teens and adults ages 14+
